zkGM ZKM Community and welcome to the August edition of our newsletter!

This month has been brimming with exciting initiatives and developments, particularly focusing around our House of ZK. From events and podcasts to hot debates and community contributions, we have a lot to share.

ZK Day

House of ZK held ‘ZK Day’ at The Science of Blockchain Conference in New York City. This event, consisting of technical workshops and debates centered around the latest innovations in ZK, was co-hosted by ZKM and Aleo, and co-organized by IC3, Stanford CBR, and Berkeley RDI. Notable experts like Jeroen van de Graaf, Lucas Fraga, and Alex Pruden shared their insights about topics such as Entangled Rollups, zkMIPS architecture, and BitcoinL2 zkVM-Powered Native Security, before the day concluded with a lively Happy Hour, offering a perfect opportunity to network and relax after a day of intensive discussions.

Contributor Corner

We launched Contributor Corner, an initiative that invites community members to submit articles about ZKM or zk-related topics, encouraging a collaborative environment where our enthusiastic community can share their insights and contribute to the growth of zero-knowledge research. Community members can write and submit articles to the Contributor Corner section of the ZKM Discord for feedback, and can earn exclusive benefits such as the 'ZKM Writer' role, access to a private group in the ZKM Discord, ZKM-branded merchandise, invitations to worldwide House of ZK events, and more. The first featured article, 'The Fiat-Shamir Transformation: Enabling Non-Interactive Proofs' by Emzo, provides a light introduction to a key cryptographic method, exemplifying the high-quality contributions we aim to highlight.

ZK Circuits vs. zkVMs

A recent discussion on X, initiated by Vanishree Rao, has sparked a lively debate about the performance comparisons between zk circuits and zkVMs. ZKM's Lucas Fraga, Wei Dai and other industry experts contributed their insights, emphasizing the importance of balancing performance with development complexity and the future of zkVMs in mainstream adoption. The discussion highlighted that while zkCircuits offer higher performance for specific, low-level tasks due to optimized logic, zkVMs provide broader applicability and ease of development for complex applications. As zkVM technology matures, it is expected to become the default proving engine for new projects, with custom ZK circuits continuing to optimize performance in specialized applications. This debate was a great example of collaborative discussion and evolving thought in the industry: x.com/ProjectZKM/status/1818952363522031716

Noteworthy Articles

ZKM translated and shared two insightful articles by ‘Haotian’ on X. The first article provides a comprehensive analysis of technological trends and their implications for the Bitcoin ecosystem, highlighting the role of zkMIPS in Bitcoin Layer 2 development and its significance in enhancing security and efficiency. This translation aims to make high-quality content accessible to the ZKM community, offering deep insights into the latest technological trends and their impact on Bitcoin development: ProjectZKM/status/1818967248226111628

The second article examined various solutions for Cross-L2 interoperability, providing an objective and comprehensive overview of how different technologies address cross-layer and cross-chain interactions, featuring ZKM's Entangled Rollup design. Given the relevance and clarity of its analysis, we believe this article offers valuable insights into how these solutions fit into the broader context of cross-chain interoperability: x.com/ProjectZKM/status/1821136857159041499
